The museum will focus on Southern American Music - the “ music that changed the world ” - emphasizing the mixing and creating of various forms of music to create new music, both past and present, particularly as it happened in the Shreveport -Bossier region. The museum will be a campus complex of interconnected buildings to house collections of Southern Music, interactive exhibits, performance space, retail space and the Center for Creative Digital Media. The design of the building will integrate the living museum of the Municipal with a newly restored Calanthean Temple. The museum will also have an outdoor presence. Grand Avenue, between SAMM and the Municipal Auditorium, will become a pedestrian plaza: the “Hayride Street of Gold”™. The plaza will be lined with larger than life size statues of Louisiana Hayride music legends, welcoming museum visitors upon arrival.
A museum of this magnitude and interest will be a regional and national tourist attraction, drawing up to 150,000 visitors per year. These attendance levels will help spur local retail development on The Avenue. SAMM will also, through its programs and services, act as a catalyst for new music business development.
